FAQs

Do I need to be a student to attend your classes?
No, you do not need to be a student or even a member of the University of Cambridge to attend our classes. They are open to all members of the public who are aged 18 or over.

Do I need to be a member to attend your classes?
Membership is not required to attend classes, though it does entitle you to discounted class prices.

Do I have to sign up beforehand?
Yes, please visit our Classes page for information on how to sign up.

I have never done ballet before - can I still join?
Yes, absolutely! Complete beginners are welcome at our Beginner ballet class.

If the class is open for registration on Webcollect, does that mean it is definitely happening?
If a class goes live on Webcollect, the time and teacher (and studio) have been confirmed.

If I am unwell or have to self-isolate, can I cancel my class sign-up?
If you wish to discuss cancellation,  please
send us an email at ballet@cusu.cam.ac.uk.

I used to do ballet but stopped some time ago, which class would be best for me?
Depending on how much experience you have, we would recommend that most people attend the Improvers class when returning to ballet after a long break. You can then adjust your level as necessary. If you would like more advice, please contact us.

What should I wear for classes?
There's no special uniform, so feel free to wear whatever's comfy! If you're starting ballet for the first time we'd recommend leggings or tracksuit trousers with a comfortable t-shirt. You can wear socks for your first few lessons, but if you decide to carry on with ballet it's best to get some flat ballet shoes, in leather or canvas, with elastic straps rather than ribbons. If you want to buy a leotard we'd recommend a simple black one, as a black leotard is a useful basic for ballet shows (here is an example).

Can I start pointe work?
If you would like to start pointe work, please attend the beginning pointe classes in your flat shoes first, so that the teacher can evaluate your strength and decide if you are ready to start pointe.

May I take photos or videos of classes or rehearsals?
Sorry, but for both legal and privacy reasons, photography and videography of classes or rehearsals are prohibited without prior approval from a committee member and the consent of all involved.
